About Fergal Somerville
Born in 1963 I took to open water swimming in 2006. In 2009 I commenced my marathon swimming career with the great 12Km Inishbofin Challenge. I later swam my first of two Cork to Cobh swims. In 2010 I swam from Inis Meáin (Aran Island) to Ros a Mhíl (Galway coast). In 2011 I swam the English Channel. In 2012 I made my first attempt on the North Channel and then swam Dublin Bay two-way (Dun Laoghaire - Howth Head). In 2013 I became the oldest yet to swim the North Channel. The swim, on 16 June, is the earliest date the North Channel has ever been swam and the swim is recorded by WOWSA as the longest swim in less than 10 degrees by time (12:21) and distance (18.6 miles).

In February 2013 and 2014 I ran the Eastern Bay Invitational International Ice Mile Swims in Lough Dan, Co. Wicklow. The swims produced 5 and 7 ice miles respectively and recorded Ireland\'s first two time ice milers; Patrick Corkery, Finbarr Hedderman and myself. Others joining the ranks of international ice mile swimmers include John Daly, Carmel Collins and Colm Breathnach (2013) and Padraic Brady, Sabrina Wiedmer (Woman\'s World Record), Ion Lazarenco, Donal Buckley
