About Us

IISA – The International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) was formed in 2009 with a vision to make swimming in icy waters a new sport. An extreme sport with a clear set of safety and integrity rules. The term “Ice Swimming” was first coined. Many more terms followed. Ice Swimming is swimming in water temperature of 5.0C / 41.0F or lower, unassisted, wearing one standard swimming costume, one pair of goggles, and one standard swimming silicon cap. IISA first introduced the Ice Mile as its ultimate achievement. An Ice Mile is One Mile (1609.3m).  In 2014 IISA introduced the Ice KM which became its competition distance. Since, IISA now covers all Ice Swimming distances from 50m to 1000m in all strokes in man, woman, and disabled categories. IISA holds Open and age groups competition in those categories. IISA has also introduced the ICe 7s, Ice Zero, Extreme Ice Mile, and few other record categories. IISA now holds Ice Swims in 46 countries and has membership in 73 countries around the world. Ice Swimming is an extreme sport with significant health and mental benefits, its motto is Safety and Integrity in the ICE. IISA believes our sport will evolve to become a Winter Olympics the first sport which will allow swimmers to compete in Winter and Summer Olympic Games in the same sport.
