I started open water swimming as an adult in 2012 when a neighbor moved in near my home in South West Surrey (and near Frensham Pond) who had been involved with the South London swim Club at the Tooting Bec Lido. I wore a wetsuit for the first winter but chucked that out in the Spring when I discovered the sheer joy of cold water immersion. I cut my teeth on cold water swimming at Frensham Pond where I swam every weekend year round for the next two years.
I have been a dedicated \'skin\' swimmer ever since and delight in the freedom this gives me to swim wherever I like, whatever the season or country. Over time, I have become deeply acclimatized to the cold to the point of finding even sub 5.0c water quite comfortable. It\'s another thing staying in for 35 minutes which is the ice mile challenge.
The ice mile is recognised as the ultimate test in cold water swimming. My swim will be attempted at Harthill reservoir near Sheffield. I will swim front crawl for circa 35 minutes in 4.7c water.
Following 4 years of winter swimming, my training for the ice mile has involved twice daily long swims every weekend over the winter of 2015/16. This has mostly been at the Hampstead Mens Pond and Parliament Hill Lido in North London.
My ice swimming life has only just begun.
